Celebration & Deland MBA Programs
Florida’s first private university, Stetson University was founded in 1883 by New York philanthropist Henry A. DeLand as DeLand Academy. In 1887, the Florida Legislature enacted the charter of DeLand University as an independent institution of higher learning. The University’s name was changed in 1889 to honor John B. Stetson, the nationally-known hat manufacturer who gave generously of his time and means to advance the quality and reputation of the institution, and who served, with Mr. DeLand and others, as a founding trustee of the University.
Today, Stetson University is a non-sectarian, comprehensive, private university composed of individually strong undergraduate programs in various colleges and schools, and a selected group of academically distinctive graduate, professional, and continuing education programs.
We seek academically talented individuals with leadership potential and records of personal growth and community service. We promote and support scholarly and creative activity among students, faculty, and staff as a means to enhance learning, teaching, and professional development, and as a contribution to the broader base of knowledge.
Stetson University serves around 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students at its main campus in DeLand, and more than 700 at the College of Law in St. Petersburg. Stetson consistently ranks among the South’s top regional universities in U.S. News and World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition. A Stetson hallmark is the incorporation of values, ethics and social responsibility into education.
Stetson’s School of Business Administration was the first business school in Florida with its first business curriculum offered in 1885. The Master of Business Administration degree has been offered since 1960.
The School of Business Administration is housed in the Eugene M. and Christine Lynn Business Center (commonly referred to as the LBC). The LBC was the first building in Florida to be certified a green building by the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. The designation was awarded in 2003.
The Master of Business Administration degree is also offered at Stetson’s Center at Celebration, opened in September 2001 as Osceola County’s first university campus.
Stetson’s business school is consistently ranked by the Princeton Review, having won several top ten awards including first place three consecutive years in the Best Campus Facilities category.
The Lynn Business Center, the first building in Florida certified “green” by the U.S. Green Building council, features state-of-the-art “smart” class and seminar rooms, a cyber café, study spaces and a real-time financial trading room. It is a modern classroom and faculty office building well suited to effective teaching and conducive to the learning experience.
In September 2001 Stetson University opened its new $7.2 million graduate studies Center at Celebration. The Stetson University Center offers master’s degree programs in business administration, marriage and family therapy, school counseling and educational leadership, with courses in professional development for educators, information technology and music.
The 36,000-square-foot Stetson University Center is located on 1.1 acres at 800 Celebration Ave. in downtown Celebration, across from the K-8 Celebration School and Founder’s Park.
Celebration is an innovative new community that successfully combines architecture, education, health and technology to promote a strong sense of community. Founded in 1994, the town of Celebration is home to approximately 8,000 residents, two Osceola County public schools, an 18-hole public golf course, parks and recreation areas, a medical center and a downtown with some 20 shops and restaurants.
The Master of Business Administration programs at DeLand and Celebration both result in the same MBA degree and are both administered through the Office of Graduate Business Programs, based out of DeLand. Our outstanding faculty commute to the Celebration campus to provide the high level of education that can be expected from all of Stetson University’s academic programs. You may decide to take classes at one or both campuses. However, keep in mind there are a few distinct differences between the administration of the MBA at DeLand and the MBA at Celebration.
When determining which campus to attend, location is probably your first consideration. Historic DeLand, Florida is conveniently located just off of I-4 in west Volusia County. Rush hour traffic is minimal if you are driving from an area east of downtown Orlando. If you are living or working west of downtown Orlando, the Celebration campus is more convenient. Located off of I-4 and Highway 417, you can expect about a thirty minute commute or less from west of downtown Orlando.
Another difference between the two campuses is the time it takes to complete the MBA. Assuming all foundation courses are complete, the MBA can be completed in as little as three semesters, or 11 months, at the DeLand campus. The rotation of classes at Celebration makes it possible for you to complete the MBA in 5 semesters, or 18 months. The Office of Graduate Business Programs will be available for advising and to answer any questions about your long-term plan regardless of the campus you choose.
One of the most important items to consider when researching business schools is accreditation. It is also an item often overlooked by prospective students. Accreditation is crucial to the quality of your degree. Future employers will consider accreditation as will other educational institutions if you decide to further your education beyond the MBA.
Stetson University has regional accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (www.sacs.org) while Stetson’s School of Business Administration business and accounting degree programs are internationally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (www.aacsb.edu).
AACSB accreditation is the highest standard a business school can achieve. In fact, less than 5% of the world's business schools have achieved the elite distinction of AACSB accreditation* while even fewer have received accreditation in both business and accounting like that held by Stetson.
